Packaging Technology

About the Department

The Department of Packaging Technology, Government Polytechnic, Nagpur, commenced its Diploma in Packaging Technology programme in 1993, marking an important milestone in the development of formal packaging education in India. The Department attained academic autonomy in 1995, further strengthening its role in providing specialized and industry-oriented education in Packaging Technology.

Packaging Technology is a specialized, application-driven field that integrates materials, engineering, design, printing and manufacturing to develop packaging solutions that protect products, preserve quality, and enable safe handling, storage and distribution.

The three-year Diploma programme provides comprehensive knowledge of packaging materials, structures and systems, including paper and paperboard, plastics, glass, metals, wood, and modern and emerging materials, along with printing and converting technologies, package design and development, manufacturing, testing and quality assurance. The curriculum also encompasses food and pharmaceutical packaging, logistics and supply chain management, sustainability, Green Packaging and Smart Packaging.

The Department emphasizes learning through application through laboratory work, projects and industrial exposure, including a Capstone Project and a 16-week industrial internship, enabling students to develop practical skills and industry readiness.

The Department continues to demonstrate its commitment to academic quality and institutional performance, having achieved an “Excellent” grade in the MSBTE Institute Monitoring Performance Grading for 2025–2026.

Scope and Opportunities

The packaging sector continues to expand, driven by population growth, urbanization, changing lifestyles, e-commerce, and increasing demand for product safety, convenience and sustainability. Packaging plays a vital role across diverse sectors, including food and beverages, pharmaceuticals, FMCG, agriculture, chemicals, engineering goods, consumer products and other industries.

Career opportunities for Packaging Technology graduates span package design and development, packaging materials, printing and converting, manufacturing, testing and quality assurance, production, and logistics. Emerging and advanced areas such as sustainable packaging, Green Packaging, Smart Packaging, 3D printing, advanced printing technologies and innovative materials are creating new opportunities for specialization, innovation and entrepreneurship.

The Department has also facilitated international career opportunities, with 5 students placed in Dubai in 2022, 4 in 2024, and 2 in 2026, demonstrating the programme's relevance to the international packaging industry.

The programme provides a strong foundation for employment, entrepreneurship and higher education in packaging, printing, materials, design, engineering and allied fields. The Department aims to develop technically competent, industry-ready and innovative professionals equipped to contribute to the packaging sector in India and internationally.
